Not even remotely close to the same situation and yet another interview where Trump's feet were not held to the fire.

What a guy on a hockey board in Canada says has little to do with the mess the United States has become. What someone says in Canada doesn't even register in the United States at all, even the Prime minister. It just doesn't matter because Americans don't care what people from other nations think, unless they are a Russian bot of course. Only how those comments affect feelings allows it to matter to you, nothing more.
If you are looking for reasons why there is a fire in the first place you can look at the difference in how the two candidates are treated and how THAT contributes fuel to the tire fire that is burning. If you stripped away the names and personalities and just looked at what has been said by the candidates there is no way this would be a race. One candidate is spewing nonsense word salad, refuses to talk policy (actually distances themselves from the very framework they would implement on day one), and is really showing all the classical signs of cognitive decline, while the other is being held to a much different and higher standard even though they have some actual (limited) policy positions outlined and can speak cogently. The fact they are held to such different standards is actually the fuel you're looking for.
