I've got a chart plotting kids and weather each year. So I've got a good idea of how much candy to buy. My problem this year is my wife really wants to go low-waste. Her suggestions is just to buy cans of pop, which can be recycled. My issue with that is as a parent I hate it when my young child gets a whole can of pop. That is just way too much to consume in one shot and it gets heavy to carry. On the other hand, the kids that are way too old to trick or treat love it.

Recyclable and low waste aren't really the same thing. There's a significant cost to recycling and even production of aluminum cans. On top of that cans come in flat with plastic.
You're probably better off with a larger chocolate bar.
Kids love the whole pops though.
