granted, I'm not a native speaker - but when I first read the sentence, it sounded more like "his death will help them be terrible and draft 1st overall", which sounds infinitely worse than "he'll look down on them and help them out". I don't think Seravalli had nefarious intentions here, but the wording is very unfortunate.
