Isn't this, in theory, good asset management? Slipping Pelts through waivers on the last day before the season stars while every other team is trying to do the same makes a lot of sense to me. Also, just because he clears waivers doesn't necessarily mean he is headed to the AHL. Pelts could stay with the big club for 30 days or 10 games played before needing to be put through waivers again. If he clears tomorrow he could still be on the team and get a few games to see if he fits. Better to send him through today than at the end of the/mid-month when he's the only guy on the list and every team has had time to assess their rosters.
Gotta love the doom and gloom over reactions. People forget that waivers =/= being sent down. If he's claimed that's unfortunate but it sure as heck isn't a guarantee.
