I was really expecting better displays of the various torture instruments in Amsterdam. I was really underwhelmed by the whole thing. We didn’t book Anne Frank in advance, so that ended up not happening, but the smiling tourists posing for family photos in front was a little cringe though, kind of the same experience at the Hiroshima bomb dome.

Oh I know exactly what you mean.
The Torture museum was a little...'touristy' where...I dont think people really grasped how brutal it really was and the museum does 'dumb it down.'
Anne Frank's house...again...this was a Cathedral of Despair. Do people understand what happened here? For her it was a 24/7 nightmare. This isn't a 'selfie spot' this is a candid exposition of a terrified person and their thoughts and feelings in situ. It is not a 'fun time.'
I've never been to Japan so I can't comment on the Hiroshima dome.
Anyways, where were we? Right, Torrington. You'll find it closer to a fun time.
