If people just pooped with their legs propped up higher when they're sitting on a toilet, they would actually use their colon to push it out correctly and likely using less toilet paper.
That, or squatting. The human body is designed to squat for optimal bowel movements. When you sit, the colon isn't at the optimal angle.
And there's some aversion to using bidets in North America, which are far more sanitary IMO. However I do see them as options on toilets now in available models.
Honestly, public washrooms with squatting holes that flush afterwards might actually be cleaner and more sanitary. Then your butt doesn't need to come into contact with anything. Probably easier to clean the washroom too.
