The reporter did not quote any sources, and the story specifically said that neither the Golden Knights, nor the NHLPA, nor Lehner's agent had spoken to the reporter ‘when reached by Daily Faceoff on Wednesday after normal business hours’.
In other words, they got a story from some anonymous source and ran it immediately without verification, when they could have talked to the team, the league, the PA, and the agent if they had only waited till morning.
The only story here is the journalistic malpractice.
