It’s absolutely disgusting that Trump is anywhere near this election. A narcissistic liar wannabe dictator, morally bankrupt with no redeeming qualities and no respect for the rule of the law should be rotting in prison right now with humanity afforded the pleasure if not the right of never hearing from that scumbag again.
It is wild the impact of where people get information.

This is the only explanation of the popularity of trump considering we all have perfect information of how he performed only 5 years. All the eligible voters were alive and experienced his performance.

But those in the maga / qanon / alberta-first spheres literally never interact with traditional media. They are fed a steady stream of hate.

Further, if they somehow do, they have been perfectly trained to reject any narratives from outside their sphere with the view that any other information is fake, and completely false.

To be fair, I talk to some left-leaning people (including on this site) who seem to have lost their ability to differentiate what they have seen and experienced and are knowledgeable about vs. rhetoric they have consumed.

Stepping back it really is quite an incredible work of brainwashing that has been done. China and Russia have been very effective at corrupting a significant portion of the population, and setting them against each other.

I wouldn't have thought this was possible if I'm honest. But then I never understood how other countries seemed to go crazy, why did Germans, Argentines, Cambodians, and Chinese people go along with pretty wild leaders?

I think what we are seeing is how charisma, hate, and a domination of information allows oppressive regimes to build widespread support and dominate countries over decades.

My take, not that anybody is interested, is the path we're on in liberal democratic societies is in real peril. Conservative movements in Canada, the UK, Europe all look at what is happening in the US as a playbook, and are emulating it.

What happens if autocrats start to lead formerly democratic and developed countries? Who stops aggression if the US and major EU countries are also autocrats just like China and Russia? Is it another landgrab like we had during colonial times? Does it ultimately lead to WW3? Does it just mean continued erosion of rights and freedoms? It's quite a scary thought.
