In fact, if the top guys take less, the money is going from them directly to the depth players. In essence, the median salary of the NHL goes up if they do this, and total salaries stay the same.

They want to have whatever puts the most pressure on GMs and Owners, because that's the best way to either get a softer cap or increase the revenue share.
And the top guys pushing or asking for more probably helps achieve that.
