Just goes to show you the mindset of their generation vs the new ones (Draisaitl et al). This new generation is all about themselves. Ovi/Sid's generation just gets it. They've already made life changing money. Generations upon generations of their family are taken care of. They know their market value, take less, yet enough not to be disrepectful, so their teams can still build around them.
I will be the first to say I hated Sid when he came into the league, with the constant whining. But he has really grown and embraced the role he has grown into, as a true ambassader of the game.

Sorry, what other star player in that "generation" took a discount? Guys like LeCavalier, Richards, Suter, and Parise made out like bandits with their salaries.
Just because Crosby is the only outlier doesn't mean he was the norm. Even Ovechkin didn't take a discount. He just signed a super long term when it was permissible under the old CBA rules.
