The first time around when him and Ovechkin took slightly less it was a marginal discount (estimated if I recall, to be about a 20% discount). He doesn’t need the money having a long career but to me this discount is substantial. I also frankly don’t know why he took that substantial discount as that team is going nowhere and signing a big name or two won’t make a difference, but it’s admirable he did what he did. If he went to free agency I could see a team paying $14M for him for a couple seasons.
