It’s not incumbent on stars to take less.
His deal came up when he came up, and he made 30% less than McDavid last time.
They either want him to stay or they don’t.
If they let him go, they can’t credibly try to keep McDavid.
There is no other play here - you pay these guys and try to tinker around the edges as best you can, and let the chips fall where they may.
