Whilst mouth breathers everywhere will tell you that this, this is the singular item that gets it done, I’m going to disagree.
For the upcoming season, the only difference is that there will not be distractions about pissy signing. It will create the questions about Mavi, even although he can’t do anything about signing until next summer, but pissy questions are now finished about signing. The team is as you see it today.
For the following season, the pissy contract takes effect, and the Mavi conversations start. One key difference though will be the team. Assuming a cap increase of less than $5.5, it means that the team will be less, or more discounted, and the team will be 1year older. If it is $5.5 cap increase, then the pissy contract consumes the cap increase in its entirety. Same discounted contracts, 1 year older team.
I don’t know what the Oilers could have realistically done differently. I do think they kicked the tires on what they could get in a trade, but realistically they had to sign pissy to get a shot at re-signing Mavi.
I think pissy’s agent did good work for the client.
I don’t think pissy finishes this contract in greaserville though. At some point, the unwashed will recognize that a retool is needed and they will drive pissy to the airport for the same bobbles and bits that mid 30 former stars making $14 per year get.
