Draisaitl and McDavid are just too good of players to not be worth extending even if at the end the contacts might suck. They have at least 5 more elite years of Draisaitl and he will be still great in 8

They should be doing whatever to resign them, but it does not change that the supporting cast is old, they have bad contracts and buyouts crippling what they can do around these guys.
It all comes down to developing players. They fail year over year drafting players that can play in this league outside the top 10 of the draft yearly. It's too late to fix this, they blew it for years. Next season is their last chance. They have nothing coming for prospects and are short picks next year. They likely trade more this up-and-coming deadline too. If I was an Oilers fan, of course I would be excited that he signed. But it doesn't mean they are better now because of it. They didn't get any discount from him and the contract is very risky for sure. Nobody can guarantee that he will sustain his play for 9 more years. It's just as likely he will play well below this deal as he will to live up to the deal.
