Respectfully, I know that your point is valid, but it's beyond the pale for me.
To be frank on this issue, I've known a lot of alcoholism in my family. Substance abuse of many kinds as well beyond that. But none of them have ever considered endangering the lives of others that way.
I'm sticking firm on this one...it's a choice. Maybe the judgement can be clouded a little, but that person still knows exactly what the potential consequences are when they decide to drive.
Again, it's not 1975. This has been part of the zeitgeist for too long to plead ignorance. He knew what he was doing.
