I'd argue that people saw this as a choice between two grandpas who neither were aging well and made their decision to support the nice grandpa over the bad grandpa. The nice grandpa is the one that would give you a hug, slip $20 in your pocket, and give you all the encouragement in the world. The bad grandpa is the one that would push you down while playing so he could win, steal money from your piggy bank, and tell you what a loser you were because you couldn't do something.

Frankly, both candidates displayed onset dementia and significant cognitive decline. You could see in their speeches as well as their physical activity. The loss of fine motor skills is an indicator people are overlooking. Biden was quickly losing his balance and it greatly affected his gait. Trump has been losing his for years and it showed in him having to use both hands to drink from a glass and really showed in his putting stroke (see his video in playing with DeChambeau). Neither should be anywhere near the ticket for their respective parties.

The choice was poor and people took the route of picking the nice grandpa who wasn't going to abuse in the basement when babysitting you. What is really ironic is the people who pointed at Biden's dementia are completely ignorant of the very same problem for Trump, which is arguably worse. The delusions he is suffering from are not only a danger to him, but a danger to the country.
