Biden's polling numbers were poor, and he thought he easiest way to revitalize his campaign would be to debate Trump and show how he compared in terms of competence, as well as dispelling any issues around his age and energy. He did get a nice boost of support after his State of the Union address where he did show quite a bit of energy and sharpness.
The problem was, and likely still is, Biden's hubris. He didn't (and probably still doesn't) see the same thing everyone else sees...he got old, and the aging was rapid and noticeable in a bad way. He miscalculated, thinking he still had it in him to win the election by convincing people he wasn't old. Everyone could see it but him, which is why it took so much time and effort to convince him to step aside.
And thank god he did...
I say that as a pretty big fan of him.

I'd argue that many on this very forum didn't see what everyone else saw (this thread even keeps receipts!), but once the switch was made, suddenly and quite magically, these same people started to see it.
