If I'm Draisaitl, I'm not signing any deal this year unless it is the biggest contract in NHL history by total dollar amount. Even if McDavid (or someone else) passed me later, I would get bragging rights for having broken the record at the time.

The PA has consistently acted like it didn't know this. I think the union bosses want the fat, high-profile contracts because the peons like to imagine themselves one day making that kind of bank.
The NHL minimum salary has been steadily decreasing as a percentage of the cap. The PA could have made an issue of that at any time, but they never did. Even the players making the minimum don't appear to care that much.
Basically, it's the same kind of foolishness as people in trailer parks buying lottery tickets.
