Longish contracts for semi proven players are pretty risky, but it's one of the best ways a team can "weaponize" their cap space during rebuilding years if they can identify their top talent early.
7X7 for Zary doesn't really make sense as 50-60 points seems to be his ceiling right now, but a $5ishX7 is reasonable if the guy scores at around a 40 point pace again this year.
Coronato could be another guy to get a contract like that. Maybe Kevin Bahl if he looks good with the Flames.
If Wolf comes out of the gate and plays well enough, maybe they extend him longer term next off season at a $5X8.
It's all managing risk, but if they can get a few guys locked up paying bigger in the front end, but team friendly deals in the back few years, it'll really help them as they're coming out of the rebuild.
