It was just easier to pick up and play. The last EA NHL game I bought was from 2 years ago, and by the time I learned how to play properly, I was tired of it. It seemed like a chore. It just seems like adding more complexity takes away from the fun.
And yeah, I'll admit that part of that is getting older.

What do you mean by the time you learned to play properly? They have simple controls included, if you just want to play single player its not hard to just jump in and play. There is a PC version of NHL 2004 that a group keeps updated with some graphic updates and rosters called NHL 2004 Rebuilt.
