don't get me wrong - i LOVE dogs... but we don't own one. we do dog sit and that is more than enough for us. the main reason we dog sit is becuz our kids would LOVE to have a dog but we don't want one for all the reasons you posted and if you add in food and vet bills they are stinkin' expensive!

I agree the costs in owning a dog is becoming a huge factor for many families these days, especially when the animals get old. Vet medicine has progressed to a point where anything done to save a human can now be done for a dog, and its not unusual to suddenly be faced with huge costs for things like cancer, various hereditary diseases, etc.
