Always remember this is a business. The coaches and management will be constantly pressuring you to stay and to even take less money to stay but think of how things would go if all of a sudden your game took a nose dive. You’re about to go into your 30s. How do you think the oilers management would respond if you turned into a perennial 50 point player two years from now? You and I both know they would jump at an opportunity to trade you anywhere else in that scenario… then all this BS about taking less for the team and building something special would be forgotten by them. You’ve given them the best years of your career already… for them to even ask you to take a discount is an insult. Any time you feel pressure from management, coaches or their media talking heads about signing a team friendly deal… you walk away from that situation and let me raise hell with them for it.”
