This often gets overlooked.
Having cap space all season and then adding retained players at the deadline, is just as big an advantage come playoff time as being on LTIR all season and adding that player back for the playoffs.
If I put a $5M player on LTIR all season, and then activate him for the playoffs I'm not allowed any cap accretional all season long, and can only exceed the salary cap come playoff time by that same $5M once I activate the player.
But if I have $2M of cap space all season long, that becomes $8M of pro-rated cap space at the deadline, and I can potentially trade for a couple of players with retention and have even more advantage come playoff time.
Generally no roster is truly under the salary cap come playoff time, because of the way salary cap accrues and how you can take advantage of that.
