Going on a long playoff run is exhausting. Going on back-to-back long playoff runs is beyond exhausting and extremely difficult. Trying to do it as the oldest team in the NHL is, well, a bold strategy to say the least.
Also, it is usually the case that goalies lift the average (most goalies are older, and contenders especially, tend to have older goalies). But in this case, the goalies actually bring down their average!
Yes, they have McDavid and Draisaitl. But they are going into a cup or bust season with suspect goaltending, a horrific D core, the oldest team in the league, having gotten smaller, slower, and significantly less physical.
THAT'S the plan!

Don't forget, the plan also involves assuming that players that found their footing and had career years will do it again. Because everyone knows that once you play for the oilers, every personal best is your new floor, and everyone who played beneath their best will have a bounceback year
this year.
I mean, maybe Skinner has found his way and is going to be a bonafide vezina candidate year after year. Every goalie that has an outstanding stretch of play never ever falls off and is like that forever right?
