not sure which airline it was, but Mom and Dad were flying back from Vegas a year or two ago. He called a month in advance to make sure they were allowed to bring their dog. Two different agents assured him it was fine. They show up at the ticket counter and they tell them the dog is not allowed to travel with them. Dad laughed and let them know he didn't really care what the rule was, they were going to have to accomodate him as they'd already realyed the information that it was allowed.
In the end, the dog ended up sleeping on their laps the whole flight (she is a really good traveller), so if you put up enough of a stink, you usually get your way.
