I still think it was actually a great idea at the time and the cash strapped Jets were in tough to match. The idea of making that to a guy with no NHL track record caught a lot of people off guard. But turned out he was a great player to target. The Blackhawks went after Keith Tkachuck shortly after with an even more aggressive offer a couple years later. One could argue it was a big reason why the Jets had to trade Selanne to Anaheim before they moved to Phoenix as they were bleeding money at the time.
