That or they were that strategic that they used the Penguins as a proxy to lull the Oilers into thinking there weren't any threats to get the timing on no arbitration cases and extra buyout windows at the time of the offer. Those offer sheets were out right after that trade call.
I suspect you are right though since the Hayes trade was barely a month old and they had to get their pick back. Does make you think the Blues may not have tried this against a different GM.
