I think Gaudreau wanted to resign but due to a boarder, a pandemic, and a growing family he made a very difficult decision.

It's what I feel he did. He had no attachment to Calgary. The letter his agent wrote to the fans said one day he will come back to visit Banff.
Term and money play a role I guess, once they started negotiating and he didn't like what was being offered he left.
