You'd also think that the prophecy might be better served by letting some of the other houses in on it. I'm not entirely sure why it needs to be a secret. Everyone was aware of the white walkers at some point, and it faded into myth. If everyone was in on the prophecy, the Night's Watch could have been built up into more than a dumping ground for the unwanted.
But I guess, as Heleana keeps saying, everyone has a role. Maybe the prophecy being hidden results in the pieces all falling into place to defeat the white walkers.
