Even though his style of play should age well, a re-sign means he’s gonna eat up a ton of their cap. Add McDavid and the BBomb, and they’re in cap hell for the first half of the contract.
Being ‘leading contenders’ for the cup, means they won’t trade him. Not many top heavy teams get to the finals back to back. Walking him to free agency, with no cup, would be quite the fun ride too.

This is the ideal path forward. No assets back, have to overpay UFA's to try and fill the hole, no prospects in the pipeline. Will they trade McDavid if he enters his last year without a contract? Would he sign if Drai just walked as a UFA? The organization would be in shambles like they deserve.
