They were always shown arguing, but I don't think it was ever that serious until Artie went on that arc where he felt like he needed to "lay the law down" and be an alpha man. Charmaine was a nag on the show, but often for good reason as Artie was incredibly naive.
They were always married and had 2 kids. Their relationship started to get a little rocky, with arguments more frequent leading up eventually to Charmaine threatening to divorce Artie after he challenged her to divorce him. Real bright one he is...
