I just think the characters are one dimensional and not very interesting or likable with a couple of exceptions.
LOTR had compelling characters and dynamics between them, the grandiose-ness and world building aside.
Who's feeling emotionally compelled to follow the bratty elf girl? She has shown few redeeming qualities. She seems to want to prove herself right about Sauron still hanging around just to be right (and been very reckless towards that end) whereas the characters in the fellowship were making a sacrifice for their friends, their homes, and the people they loved.
