Neat thing about Tony the real life person is that he was actually in the mob. He took the role as serious as anyone could.
I thought his character was awesome. He was old school, but he also seemed like someone who had feelings like you said and getting zero recognition from Tony, along with his Mom being his aunt hurt him a lot.
Actually for the ending my conspiracy theory is that Paulie whacked Tony.
They always had a lot of tension, but it seems heightened towards the end even when Tony thinks about killing him in Miami. The last episode when he forced that construction job on him you can clearly see how agitated he is.
Also the team of Paulie and Christopher is some of the best TV ever. Pine Barrens. Shooting that waiter over the tip.
