To be fair, there's potentially still a lot of story left to tell here. Lots of main characters need to have everything resolved. If anything the show has set some lofty goals of fitting that all into the last season.
With TWD they stretched out the Saviors/Whisperers/Commonwealth storylines to the point it just wasn't worth watching. Then they threw in a bunch of drama between characters that really didn't support the extra time. And how many times can you rewatch essentially the same plot. Rick and his gang try to be good guys, they run into a powerful larger group of A-holes. There's a mini-war. Do it again.
As long as the Boys doesn't stretch the final season into 12+ episodes, I think it'll be fine. I would even be fine with 12-14, as long as it's good. TWD was 24 fricken episodes for the last season, and 22 for season 11. It was already dragging with too many episodes by season 10, and I just flat out didn't even bother watching the last two seasons due to the episode count.
