I was really interested in the 10-eye Doc Martens, but when I finally got to try them on, they weren’t comfortable at all, so I gave up on that dream rather than spending the money and complaining about my circumstances.

That's where they get you with the "break-in period". You say it doesn't feel good and the salesman says it's because the luxury shoe needs time to mold itself to your feet and once it's broken in, it will be like walking on a cloud. What that really means is they want to wear it long enough that you can't return it.
