Some of them are old rail, a lot aren't though. I think they got the clay blend just right. Point is, these paths don't need maintenance, have very little cost, and don't degrade like asphalt does.
I've often wish Calgary would look at whatever Canmore used, and do that. So many gravel pathways instantly erode in this city. And you can tell just looking at it that it doesn't' have any "sticky" qualities to hold it together. More clay!
