Drunk drivers tend to be alcoholics who drive drunk
a lot. It’s very difficult to get this group to change their behaviour through social messaging and shaming. Once they’ve killed someone, it’s too late.
The only way to stop them is to catch them multiples times and take away their licenses. But you can drive for years and years without hitting a check stop, because they’re costly to operate. So the question is how much are you willing to increase the annual operational budget of the police in order to catch 10 or 20 or 30 more drunk drivers a year and eventually get some of them off the road?
