Social psychologists Schroeder and Epley have found that when we hear someone's voice rather than reading their words, we find them more competent, thoughtful and intelligent. My guess is the opposite is true when we only
read the words of a differing point of view. We are more likely to think they are the opposite of those characteristics and our responses reflect our diminished opinion of them.
