That's a pretty good value contract. He has a great shot and works pretty hard. He is far from a complete player which limits his deployment, but he is also one of the most efficient point producers over the last couple of years when you look at points produced versus ice-time.
Last season he had 18 goals and 43 points averaging just 12:00 per game (76 games played). The year before, he had 21 goals and 46 points while averaging just 11:25 minutes per game (in only 66 games played).
I would have loved the Flames to give him a contract like that has an asset that could later be flipped, but I recognize there is already a bit of a log jam at wing and it is important to give the young guys more rope right now.
