He wasn't even the candidate yet.
He certainly wasn't getting the A-Team (or even the B Team), but rather ECHL level SS agents. Now I suspect most SS agents are pretty good...but are we sure they are the best of the best of the best? Gotta be a lot of ex-military who can't figure out what else to do domestically? It really doesn't seem like a very appealing job to me compared to most other LEO jobs where you have a bit of freedom and get to actually use your brain.
Staffing Trump's team must be an interesting process. When the job literally involves turning yourself into a human bullet vest, you probably want an agent who is supportive - or at least not opposed - to their assignment. Which may or may not say something about overall intelligence
