For CCW they do background check and all that and you take a course.
"Of 14,000 CCW licensees in Oregon, only 4 (0.03%) were convicted of the criminal (not necessarily violent) use or possession of a firearm. Americans use firearms for self-defense more than 2.1 million times annually."

Also, there are limits to where you can carry in certain states. You would not be able to take a firearm into a night club. In some states, I don't think you are allowed to carry into any place that serves alcohol.
"Concealed weapons permittees depict themselves publicly as law-abiding Americans, and generally the statistics support that image. During the fourth quarter of 2001, the most recent quarter for which numbers are available, the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification issued 2,291 permits and revoked 40 permits."
Utah has 59,000 CCW permits and at 40 per quarter revoked that's 0.0027% per year.

To me, it's easy to understand why the revocation rates are low. These people go through background checks, courses, payments to the state for the license as well as fingerprints by the department of homeland security. Most people who will go through all this are more or less responsible people.
