Where the owners really make money is selling the franchise. Look at the cost of acquiring an NHL franchise 20 years ago vs. now. The Arizona owner made a massive amount of money after doing an absolutely terrible job of owning/managing that team.
But yes, they will lose lots of money every year owning the club. Owning an NHL franchise is not for the faint of heart or people who can't lose 10s of millions every year.
Owning an NHL franchise is like owning a piece of real estate. You have to put money into every year to stop it from crumbling, and the more money you put into it the more it will be worth at the end, but you don't get every dollar you put in out.
