Huberdeau’s contract is almost buyout proof. If he was bought out in 4 years with 3 years left the cap hit in the first 3 years of the contract would be

8.11 million
10.61 million (more than the cap if he played that year)
6.61 million.

When you add on the cost of the salary for the player that replaces him in that scenario it could cost the flames more in cap space to buy him out than to play him (putting aside the 1.11 million cap hit for the 3 following years).

If there was a deal that somehow got you out now without giving up a boatload of picks I think the Flames would have to at least look at it.

Basically almost any year you buy him out the actual cap cost of a buyout is probably more than the cap cost to play him.
