I think so.

IIRC some of the Advanced metrics had him as a top 20 dman in the NHL that season based on average game score. He looked like a legit game breaker, especially before his injury that season. He was playing tougher minutes than Bean or Valimaki did and looked like a legitimate top 4 dman.

If he continued that level of play for the next two seasons and didn't have his personal issues then there wouldn't be a lot of people questioning a 4x $2.5M contract.

So it's just if you want to take the risk that you think he could be that guy again and try to buy low on him.

Personally I would not have advocated for that...but NHL GMs have given out worse contracts before.
