Old foreign coaches sometimes lose touch with this generation and cultural differences. I can't see a young squad like Canada listening to an old coach.
I'll give you a recent example. Vietnam. Vietnam had an obscure Korean coach who was Hiddink's assistant in 2002. He took them to unseen levels from 2016 to 2022. Beating rival Thailand consistently, 4th place at the Asian Games, quarterfinals at the Asian Cup, finalist at the Asian U-20s, qualifying for the U20 World Cup, final round of World Cup qualifying. All firsts.
Vietnam wanted to go to the next level, with the expanded Asian and World Cup, and hired Phillipe Troussier. He didn't even last 1 year. Lost 3 consecutive times to minnows Indonesia (ranked 145), including 3-0 in Hanoi, once a fortress, and already knocked out of the 2026 World Cup. His style of play was easily neutralized by modern coaches.
