Philly makes sense due to Cutter and maybe they wanted a F anyways. NJ took the unicorn as they already had young offensive guys already in the NHL, so maybe even they get a pass. But why didn’t SJ take him?
He’s from California so I can’t imagine he wouldn’t play there.
There was a clear top 6 D in this draft and he was the last one taken.

Yeah he was ranked around 2nd for D on most lists. Lots of variation though. Maybe he interviewed poorly, or maybe scouts saw it differently based on the league he was playing in. The Yakemchuk pick still blows my mind.
