I don't buy that it's too late to make a change. How well known was Barack Obama for the average voter on July 5, 2008? Certainly he had lots of momentum through the primaries, but that's for people more plugged in than the average.

Then again we probably have to go back to 1992 for the other relatively 'unknown' candidate to have won, but I'd argue that only Kerry, Obama, McCain, and Romney are the only candidates that entered the race with little familiarity. Kerry and Romney lost to incumbents, and one of the other two had to win their race.
