You simply have zero idea whether or not he voluntarily chose to "take the time off". Typing "voluntarily" in all caps does not change that fact (indeed, it only draws more attention to it).
Granted, I don't know anything for certain either. But the statements of both Kylington and the Flames suggests that it was involuntary. And that is certainly the more plausible explanation for a person who has dedicated their entire life to reaching the NHL to, months after finally achieving that life-long goal, risks it all by leaving his team for a year-and-a-half.
