It really is a rule they need to adjust...if you are a first round pick you should be able to enter the AHL for your Draft+2 regardless of age.

Sending him back to junior delays not only the start of his initial 3 year deal, but also re-signing him on his second deal when you have to believe the club, at that point, will see themselves as contenders and where it is he will make a real impact to the team.

Because there is such thing as stalling development when a player is playing too long against a level of competition he's clearly better than.
He's CHL dman of the year and won a Memorial Cup already...sure you can keep him in the CHL for one more season but keeping him there for 2 more years is going to stunt his development more than it helps it.
Ideally he'd be spending that season in the AHL but it's a stupid rule that forces him to stay in the CHL...TBH i'm suprised that rule hasn't been challenged legally or by the players association. It actually prevents the player from making money they could be making in the AHL and forces them to go play for nothing in the CHL.
