As long as you don't get involved in gang violence, you're probably okay. It's like that in most US cities. The violent crime stats are HEAVILY occurring amongst gangs of young men in less advantaged communities. People aren't regularly getting gunned down in higher class subburbs in Chicago.
Even for crimes like robberies, the overall rate in the USA is about 40% higher, but those incidents are disproportionally occurring in those same disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
Even with gun crimes, once you take out gang related, domestic, and suicide related gun incidents, the difference between Canada and the USA is not all that great. The USA obviously has a problem with mass shootings, but on a per capita basis you have a pretty remote chance of getting caught up in one of those.
